Prep volleyball: Round one to Bishop Blanchet

Looks like it’s going to be another crazy year of volleyball in the Metro League.

Coming into the season, most everyone was pointing at Seattle Prep as the favorite, not only in the league, but as a state contender as well.

We got a reminder last night not to forget about Bishop Blanchet. The 10th-ranked Braves are the defending state champions, don’t forget. And Tuesday they proved they still are a team to be reckoned with, pulling out a 3-2 victory at No. 6 Seattle Prep.

“That Prep team is really good,” Blanchet coach Matt Chang said this morning. “It was a good ‘W’ for us.”

Blanchet swept the first two sets, 25-20, 25-23, before Prep came storming back to take the next two, 25-19, 25-16.

“They looked unstopable in games three and four,” Chang said. “Then in the fifth we had two early runs that helped us.”

He said his team jumped ahead something like 3-1 and 7-2 (he didn’t have the scores in front of him). Blanchet ultimately won 15-8. Molly Manca and Miranda Bush led the charge with 20 and 18 kills, respecitvely, while Chloe Sliger collected 37 assists. Lexi Popich contributed 16 digs. Riley Stewart (4 blocks) and Beth Lidgard (3 blocks) were keys as well.

Seattle Prep had some solid performances by Gabby Bird-Vogel (17 kills) Olivia Magill (13 kills), Lauren Ellingwood (29 assists) and Elizabeth Lundberg (19 digs).

Blanchet gets another test Thursday at Eastside Catholic, which knocked off Woodinville (ranked No. 4 in 4A) on Monday. The rematch with Prep comes Sept. 30.
