Class 4A and 3A state football rankings — Week 5

After several upsets over the weekend, there was some shuffling in this week’s rankings.

Let’s start in Class 3A.

When I watched Juanita play Mercer Island a few weeks ago, it was clear the Rebels had plenty of talent with a big line, strong running game and playmakers on defense.

However, what wasn’t clear was whether or not they would be able to tighten up mental mistakes that resulted in penalties and turnovers.

While there is still some work to be done in that regard, Juanita’s 28-14 win over Liberty, ranked No. 2 last week, proved to me the Rebels are for real.

Bellevue remains at No. 1 and the next four teams in the rankings could all make a case for the top spot. Camas jumps to No. 2. Capital is No. 3, followed by Juanita and Mount Spokane. I considered putting the Rebels at No. 3, but Capital’s schedule through five weeks is as tough as any team in the state.

Liberty drops to No. 7.

In 4A, the big upset came with Auburn, ranked No. 3 last week, falling to Kentwood. The Conks’ win vaults them to No. 5, while the Trojans fall to No. 8.

Chiawana climbs into the rankings at No. 9 after knocking off Richland, 17-7. Kentlake remains undefeated and could play its way into the rankings with games against Kentwood and Auburn the next two weeks.
