Final 4A and 3A high-school volleyball rankings

Just days from now, we’ll know who the real top-eight volleyball teams are in the state for each classification, at least based on how they play in the state tournaments (and a little on how the brackets play out.

For now, though, I’ve come up with the final 4A and 3A rankings. There are changes at the top in both based on the Eastern Regional championships. In each case, I’ve simply flip-flopped the 1s and 2s.

In 3A, I toyed with pushing Eastside Catholic to No. 2 ahead of Mount Spokane. The Crusaders clearly have been under-ranked all season and they’ve got a legitimate chance to win it all over in Kennewick this week. They could well play No. 1 West Valley of Yakima in the semifinals, although I’ll be anxious to see how Kennedy Catholic responds to its first loss of the season. The Lancers drop from No. 2 to No. 5 and would likely get West Valley if they get past Holy Names in the opening round — but that’s no given.

I think there are several teams who could win in 3A, including Camas, which was impressive in Saturday’s West Central/Southwest bi-district tourney.

In 4A, it’s hard to bet against No. 1 Mead, the defending champion. Especially after Saturday’s victory over former-No. 1 Richland. They are in opposite halves of the bracket and could well meet in the final.

But these things rarely play out the way they’re penciled in. Issaquah, Olympia, Jackson and Graham-Kapowsin all have to be considered contenders, in my book. And how’s this for a potential quarterfinal: Mead vs. G-K. And G-K has no easy opener against Newport.

I’m looking forward to three exciting days of volleyball in Kennewick, including the 2A tournament. I’ll try to keep you as updated as much as possible on 4A, 3A and 2A, but remember to look on the WIAA website, where results and highlights have been updated quickly in the past.
