Basketball practices officially started this week and games will begin soon, so I wanted to catch you up on some news I just heard about.
Two top-notch senior players — Napa Mefi from Beamer and Deshea Bell from Kennedy Catholic — have transferred to Federal Way, which won the Class 4A state boys title in 2009 and placed third last season.
I have not been able to verify whether both will be immediately eligible to play for the Eagles, who graduated two high-quality players from last year’s team in Cole Dickerson (University of San Francisco) and Isiah Umipig (Cal-State Fullerton).
Mefi, listed as a 5-11 guard last season, is Beamer’s all-time leading scorer, averaging 16.8 points per game as a junior and 15.1 as a sophomore, when he helped lead the Titans to state for the first and only team (they just missed qualifying last season, losing a winner-to-state game to Kentwood, which went on to capture the title).
Bell, listed at 6-2 last season, averaged 20.9 points for the Lancers as a junior.
I’ll pass along any additional information as it comes available.
