It always tough to break down the first week of the high-school basketball season. Some teams are still missing football players. Some teams are still working to find chemistry and some teams haven’t even played a game yet.
So, with that said, I didn’t change the Class 4A and 3A rankings much.
In 4A, the changes are at the bottom. At 3-0, Kentwood moves up one spot to No. 9. Gonzaga Prep, which was No. 9 last week falls out after losing to Davis, 59-46.
Based on reports I’m hearing out of Spokane, Ferris is projected to be the top team in the GSL and, while Gonzaga Prep will be competitive, the Bullpups took a big hit when Charlie Hopkins suffered a knee injury during football season.
I’ve also heard good things about Davis and the Pirates’ win over Gonzaga Prep seems to back that up, so they jump in at No. 10.
In 3A, I wasn’t sure what to do with Lincoln and Glacier Peak, ranked Nos. 3 and 4 after starting 0-1. Lincoln lost to Mount Tahoma and Glacier Peak fell to Jackson, which is ranked No. 4 in 4A.
It’s impossible to penalize a team too much after one loss, so I moved Franklin up to No. 3 and dropped the Abes and Grizzlies to five and six. That means the Metro League has the top-three teams in the state right now. The Quakers will be good — they open the season on Tuesday at Lakeside — but they face the challenge of playing a full road schedule.
The school’s bleachers are broken and won’t be fixed until after the school year.
After Lake Washington’s 2-0 start I bumped the Kangaroos up to No. 4. With plenty of holiday tournaments coming up, there should be more shuffling on the horizon as teams settle into the season.
