Northwest School’s Maddie Meyers finished in 26th place at the Foot Locker Cross Country National Finals at Balboa Park in San Diego Saturday.
The junior, who is the three-time Class 1A cross-country champion, finished the 5-kilometer course with a time of 18 minutes, 19 seconds.
Meyers said she enjoyed the experience, but was disappointed with her performance.
“I didn’t really notice, but I guess the race went out really fast,” Meyers said. “I got an OK start, but my legs were just kind of feeling dead today.”
Aisling Cuffe, from Northeast Cornwall Central High School in New York won the race in 16:53. In last year’s race Meyers placed 23rd in a time of 18:12.
She took third at the 32nd-annual Foot Locker Cross Country Championships West Regional at Mount San Antonio College in Walnut, Calif. last week, finishing in 18:18.
“I’m already excited to, hopefully, come back next year and do better,” Meyers said. “My only goal this year was to be able to make it to Foot Locker, because it’s so much fun. I think that’s going to be my main goal next year.”
