We had a post Monday about the upcoming King Holiday Hoopfest at Hec Edmundson Pavilion on Jan. 17, Martin Luther King Jr. Day. This year’s event actually starts Jan. 15 with three games at Seattle University’s Connolly Center.
I wanted to make sure you know about three other basketball events those two days, especially if you’re a fan of girls basketball. The Hoopfest has always included at least one girls game for as long as I can remember (and I’ve always lobbied for more), but this time time all 10 games feature the boys.
I do know that the event organizers originally planned to include a girls game between Cleveland and Garfield, but there was a scheduling snafu forced that game to be moved to Cleveland on the 17th at 4:30 p.m. That should be a good one.
The Comcast Showcase on Jan. 17 at the ShoWare Center in Kent features five boys games and two girls games, while the six-game “I Have a Dream” Matchup at Foster that day all feature girls teams. I’ll post the complete schedules below.
And on Jan. 15. there’s another all-girls event, the Northwest All-Stars Assist for Life, which involves four games, three of which include ranked teams. A portion of the proceeds will benefit breast cancer research.
Again, I’ll post the full schedule below, but let me mention that the Assist for Life event at Lakes will be highlighted by two games I’m particularly interested in — No. 4 Issaquah against No. 7 Bellarmine Prep of Tacoma at 5 p.m. and Garfield (formerly ranked) against No. 1 Federal Way at 7 p.m. Plus, Auburn Mountainiview, ranked No. 9 in 3A, takes on a quality Emerald Ridge squad at 1 p.m.
This event was originally scheduled at Clover Park, but was just relocated to Lakes due to a scheduling conflict.
The highlight game of the “I Have a Dream” Matchup in my book is Holy Names vs. Kennedy Cathoic at 4:30 p.m. Those two teams are currently first and fourth in the 3A rankings, both unbeaten. You’ll also have the chance to see Timberline (No. 6 in 3A) against Port Angeles at 1:30 p.m.
Over at ShoWare, the Auburn Riverside girls, rated No. 3 in 4A, will take on always tough Oregon City at 1 p.m. The opening game of the day pits Lakes of Tacoma (No. 7 in 3A) against Kentwood, a 4A contender. There are some interesting boys games on the docket, too — such as No. 3 Kentwood vs. No. 9 Union of Vancouver at 6 p.m. and No. 7 Auburn vs. Enumclaw at 7:30 p.m.
