The 1971 Mount Rainier boys basketball team will be the first group inducted into the school’s Hall of Fame and will be honored at halftime of the Rams 7:30 p.m. game against second-ranked Kentridge on Friday.
The 1971 squad was the first state-tournament team in the school’s history in any sport and won the school’s first league basketball title, finishing with a record of 19-6.
The Rams were unranked all year, but scored wins against No. 3 Franklin (76-64), No. 6 South Kitsap (87-47) and No. 7 Nathan Hale (94-62) during the AAA state tournament, now Class 4A.
The team’s only loss at state came against Pasco in the semifinals, 67-62, a game that was decided in a state-record four overtimes.
The Rams finished the state tournament with scoring records for field goals (39) and points (94) in a game and field goals (126) and points (319) over four games. This came in the days before the shot clock and three-pointers.
