I’ve got another update for you from the Assist for Life girls basketball event at Steilacoom High School.
And let me say this first thing — Lake Washington junior Hunter Hopkins is some kind of player. She scored 20 of her season-high 27 points in the first half and the Kangaroos went on to beat Bonney Lake, 46-45, recording their 10th straight victory.
The smooth 6-foot Hopkins contributed in other ways, too, finishing with five rebounds, four assists and three steals. Two of those picks came in the final minute as LW (10-3) held off a furious Bonney Lake rally.
Hopkins made 1-of-2 free throws with 5:10 remaining to give the Kangs a 46-33 lead, but they failed to score the rest of the way.
Bonney Lake (5-8), which knocked off seventh-ranked Lakes this past week, closed it to 46-45 with 1:19 to play on a three-pointer by Carli Elwin, who finished with 23 points, seven rebounds and seven assists. The Panthers had chances after that, but didn’t take care of the ball.
LW’s Whitney Dunlap also had an impressive all-around game with 10 points, 12 rebounds and five steals.
For Bonney Lake, Savanna Moorehouse contributed 11 points, nine rebounds and six steals.
