Class 4A and 3A girls high-school hoops rankings — Week 8

Sometimes, it’s not if you lose, but when you lose.

At least that’s my take on the state girls basketball rankings this week.

If you missed, the big upset last week was Mead taking down former-No. 2 Gonzaga Prep in Greater Spokane League play. Mead, last year’s 4A state runnerup, is just 8-6. It was just the second loss of the season for GP.

I am leaving Gonzaga in the top-10, but at No. 5 this week. Bellarmine Prep inches back up to No. 2. Chiawana of Pasco avenged an earlier loss to Moses Lake and I’ve heard the Riverhawks are playing very well right now, so they move up to No. 3 and Edmonds-Woodway stays at No. 4. Chiawana takes on No. 8 Richland Friday.

Moses Lake drops out for now. I wrestled with which team to put in at No. 10 — Eastlake? Emerald Ridge? Lake Stevens? I’m going with Eastlake, which has a big game with No. 6 Issaquah on Friday.

In 3A, the top six remain the same. I was impressed with Cleveland and even more with Holy Names (again). Wilson (formerly No. 7) lost not only to No. 6 Timberline, but to unranked Lincoln, so it’s out with the Rams for now. Plus, Lynnwood (formerly No. 9) fell to Shorecrest.

So, I’m going with Auburn Mountainview back in the top-10, and the Lions have a chance Tuesday to prove they are worthy as they face No. 8 Lakes. The No. 10 spot was another head-shaker. I have Mount Si some consideration, and the Wildcats could really open some eyes Wednesday if they upset No. 7 Juanita. I rarely go with a seven-loss team in the top-10, unless a 3A team owes most of those to 4A competition, but I ultimately went with Shorecrest. The Scots have won seven in a row, but get tested again Wednesday against Meadowdale.

This was one of the toughest weeks to sort out, in my opinion. Feel free to give me yours.
