I was saddened to hear about the passing of Duane Hamamura, who was a longtime photographer for the newspaper chain that was anchored in Kent and went through a variety of name changes over the past three-plus decades.
You might recognize the names Kent News Journal (or Renton Record Chronicle or Auburn Globe), Valley Dailey News, South County Journal or King County Journal — now the Reporter Newspapers.
If so, you most certainly would recognize Duane’s photos. I was fortunate to work with him for about six years before coming to The Seattle Times in 1987. His photos spanned every walk of life, but I of course especially enjoyed his sports shots. He had such amazing timing and attention for detail…not so much to capture the winning basket as the coach jumping three feet in the air in reaction to it.
Former sports reporter Mark Moschetti, who worked with Duane even longer, wrote a touching tribute to Duane that ran in the Auburn Reporter along with a slide show featuring some of his more memorable work, and you can find it here.
You might recognize some of the athletes and coaches depicted in them, when they were a lot younger! I so enjoyed going through it, and you very well might, too.
