Class 4A and 3A girls high-school hoops rankings

Here we go! Postseason girls basketball play begins around the state this week, and I can’t wait. In fact, the KingCo 3A tourney actually started last Saturday.

Don’t be surprised if we see some changes of note in the rankings next Monday. I won’t. But there are few this time around.

Only one ranked team lost — Gonzaga Prep in 4A (to formerly ranked Lewis and Clark). G-P stays in the rankings, sliding from fifth to ninth.

Besides some shuffling, there were no big changes in 4A. L-C is on the verge of cracking the rankings again, but not yet. I really think it’s a deep field this year. I’d love to get Kentwood and Woodinville back in the top-10, but who should drop out? It’s been hard to keep Emerald Ridge, Lake Stevens, Mount Tahoma and South Kitsap unranked as well — none of which have more than three losses (and ER’s lone two losses have been to top-ranked Federal Way).

Woodinville, by the way, seems to be playing scary-good right now.

All those teams will have chances to make cases for themselves over the next week or two. Kentwood, for instance, plays Auburn Riverside on Tuesday hoping to sweep the Ravens and earn the South Puget Sound League 4A North Division’s top seed to the league tournament and a showdown with Federal Way, the South Division champ.

In 3A, Shadle Park fell to North Central and slides from third to sixth. I still see the Highlanders as a team that could be at the Tacoma Dome in a few weeks. But only one 3A team from that Greater Spokane League will advance, so we’ll see. North Central remains on the watch list but obviously is a contender.

Mount Si, which made its debut in the rankings last week at No. 9, was upset by Bellevue (a team that did not make the playoffs), and drops out of the top-10. So, welcome back Lynnwood. Juanita and North Central also got heavy consideration.
