First look at state gymnastics

The field is set for the 4A and 3A/2A state gymnastics meets this Friday and Saturday at the Tacoma Dome Exhibition Hall, where the state meet has been conducted since 1990.

The Times will publish its gymnastics state preview article Thursday. Among the questions to be answered this weekend: Who will replace Woodinville as state 4A champ after the Falcons’ four-year title run? Can Newport make it six straight state 4A titles for KingCo 4A schools? Can Enumclaw win a state title in its first year of gymnastics? Could a school from Eastern Washington win a state title for the first time since 1970? And could any school be sadder about missing out on the state meet than University of Spokane, which scored 172.075 at a 3A/2A regional on its home floor last Friday but placed second to Kamiakin and missed out on the meet’s lone winner-to-state berth?

Here are the top team scores recorded last weekend at state-qualifying meets and a sweet 16 of the best all-around scores. Judging has a subjective element and can vary from meet to meet, so it’s hard to say these scores are an accurate forecast of this weekend’s outcome. The playing field levels this weekend when everyone performs in front of the same judges.
