Class 4A and 3A high-school softball rankings — Week 2

Here’s something you don’t see very often when it comes to my softball rankings (or my rankings for volleyball or girls basketball, either, for that matter): The top three teams in 3A all lost last week, but they remain 1-2-3.

Well, No. 1 Sedro-Woolley happened to lose to Woodinville, the No. 1 team in 4A. Sure, the score was a little lopsided at 10-0. But it was hard for me to rationalize dropping the Cubs, especially since the next two teams lost as well and No. 4 Bainbride hasn’t played anyone at the same level as Woodinville.

No. 2 Southridge actually lost twice, but those games were against Walla Walla, which is ranked No. 2 in 4A. And No. 3 Kelso (coming off back-to-back 4A state championships) lost to Woodland, the defending 2A champion that features perhaps the state’s top pitcher.

But there is movement elswhere in 3A. Prairie, which started at No. 6, is down on the watch list after falling to Battle Ground (10-0) and Heritage (5-3). While those are 4A teams, those losses are cause for concern, for now. I expect the Falcons to be back in the top-10 before long.

That left one spot open in 3A, and I’m going with Bonney Lake this week at No. 10. Kennedy Catholic also got a good look at 4-0, but I’m waiting to see what happens in Wednesday’s Seamount showdown with 3-0 Highline.

In 4A, Marysville-Pilchuck moves up to No. 3 and Kentlake gets the No. 4 spot as both Richland and Tahoma lost last week (but they both stay in the top-10, just sliding down). Richland split with a pretty good Kamiakin team, while Tahoma went down 1-0 in 10 innings against Jefferson.

New to the top-10 is Battle Ground, checking in all of the way up at No. 5. after wins over Union (formerly No. 8) and Prairie. And Mead bumps Central Valley out of the rankings after beating the Bears. The Panthers are now 2-2 after that early 0-2 start (losing to Richland and Southridge) and step in at No. 9.

That left one position open, and I’m going with Snohomish at No. 10. We’ll see how that stacks up after today’s game went 4-1 Arlington. And Kentlake has a test today as well against 3-0 Auburn Riverside.

We’re off to a crazy start, so it will be interesting to see how things shake out next week!
