It was an interesting week of high-school softball, and some of the results left me in a quandry when it came to updating the rankings.
I’ll start in 3A, where No. 2 Southridge was swept by previously unranked Kamiakin in a battle between Kennewick rivals. That meant I had to get Kamiakin in the top-10, and they are at No. 7 this week. But what to do with Southridge? I rarely do this, but the Suns actually drop all of the way out, for now.
That’s because the only other top-10 team that lost was Bainbridge (formerly No. 3). And while the Spartans actually stumbled twice, one of those came against Holy Names (which jumps from No. 9 to No. 5) and the other to Lakeside of Nine Mile Falls, which I know nothing about.
I’m leaving Bainbridge in at No. 10 and the Spartans are scheduled to get another crack at Holy Names on Tuesday. Holy Names’ lone loss, by the way, came Friday against Walla Walla, which is ranked No. 2 in 4A.
Walla Walla has a big showdown with No. 5 Richland on Friday.
In 4A, Wenatchee suffered its first loss of the season, committing 12 errors in a 9-8 loss to Moses Lake. The Panthers bounced back to win the second half of the doubleheader and drop from No. 6 to No. 8.
Jackson actually slides up from No. 9 to No. 7 despite losing to No. 3 Marysville-Pilchuck. The final was just 5-4, so I’m not penalizing the Timberwovles. Mead, which lost a shocker to 2-8 Gonzaga Prep, hangs in at No. 10.
We could see more movement in 4A next week, so stay tuned.
