Here is some information we received from Archbishop Murphy:
The Archbishop Murphy High School varsity boys’ baseball and varsity boys’ soccer teams were named 2A State Academic Champions today. The baseball team, coached by Stan Taloff, has a combined GPA of 3.601. The boys’ soccer team, coached by Eddie Fernandez, has a combined GPA of 3.605. These two teams join the AMHS girls’ soccer and girls’ swimming teams, who were named 2A State Academic Champions in the fall.
Points received from these placements accumulate in the WIAA Scholastic Cup program. The WIAA Scholastic Cup recognizes performance in the classroom as well as on the playing surface. Schools that finish at the top of their respective classifications in state athletic competition receive points, as do schools that finish at the top in team academic performance. Sportsmanship is also a factor, with substantial points deducted for ejections from contests. At the end of the year, the school with the most points in their classification is awarded the prestigious Scholastic Cup.
Archbishop Murphy won the 2A Scholastic Cup last school year (2009-2010).
