One week from this Saturday, we’ll know who the true No. 1 softball teams are in Class 4A and 3A.
My best guesses: Woodinville in 4A and Holy Names in 3A, as reflected in these final rankings of the season. I believe both are capable of finishing on top. But there are plenty of other legitimate contenders, too, led by Walla Walla in 4A and Juanita in 3A.
Actually, I think there are a number of teams that could win, and that’s what makes these tournaments exciting. And the tourneys leading up to state should be pretty interesting, too. I’ll do my best to keep you updated.
There is one newcomer in each of the polls this week. South Kitsap, which has won 10 in a row, gets the No. 10 spot in 4A with Puyallup dropping out. The Vikings lost twice last week — to No. 6 Kentlake and No. 8 Tahoma — but are still capable of making a trophy run at state. Mount Spokane jumps in at No. 9 in 3A after knocking off University (formerly No. 3).
I debated about dropping the Titans all of the way out of the rankings, but left them in at No. 10. Kelso, which won the 2009 and 2010 4A championships, drops to the watch list after losing twice to Camas last week. The Papermakers are on a roll, winning their last six after finishing third in the Greater St. Helen’s 3A conference behind Kelso and Prairie, and were highly considered for the 10th spot as well. Mountlake Terrace, which is also riding a six-game winning streak, also got a hard look.
