State softball brackets now available

I’ll be in Lacey for the Class 3A state softball tournament, and I think it’s going to be an exciting one.

The WIAA just posted the brackets for all classifications. I’ll start with the 3A, since it’s closer to home and likely to draw more local fans. You can find it here.

For those of you 4A fans, don’t worry. We’re making arrangements for someone to cover that tournament in Spokane for us. You can find the 4A bracket here.

I’ll talk a little about those two tournaments in this post, but I know there are people interested in the smaller-school softball brackets as well, so here you go: 2A, 1A, 2B and 1B.

The 3A pairings are intriguing, thanks in part to what would be categorized as a couple of “upsets” if you go by rankings. But then we all know rankings don’t really mean much.

The first-round game I’m most anxious to see is No. 2 Juanita vs. No. 5 Everett. Juanita beat No. 1 Holy Names in the Sea-King District championship game, while Everett lost the Northwest District final to surging Mountlake Terrace.

Holy Names gets Kelso, the 4A champion in 2009 and 2010 that wound up as the No. 5 qualifier out of the West Central/Southwest Bi-District. Mountlake Terrace takes on a solid University of Spokane team ranked No. 10.

No. 6 Bonney Lake, upset by Peninsula in Saturday’s bi-district final, opens against Bellevue (Sea-King No. 5). Peninsula, which had lost four times to Bonney Lake this season, gets No. 7 Bainbridge.

The other 3A openers — No. 3 Sedro-Woolley vs. No. 4 Kamiakin, Capital vs. Mount Spokane and Mount Si vs. No. 8 Wilson.

In 4A, top-ranked Woodinville starts with Emerald Ridge and No. 2 Walla Walle faces Jefferson. The two are in opposite halves of the bracket and could meet in the championship game, barring upsets.

Here’s a really tough first-round game: No. 3 Marysville-Pilchuck vs. No. 6 Kentlake. M-P lost the Northwest District championship game to Jackson, which opens against Stadium of Tacoma. No. 5 Eastlake gets Rogers of Puyallup in the first round, while No. 8 Tahoma faces No. 9 Arlington.

The other two openers pit No. 4 Richland against No. 7 Spanaway Lake and Skyview of Vancouver against Wenatchee.

Let’s hope we get some decent softball weather (I got sunburned on Friday and froze on Saturday!) and I’m sure we can count on some outstanding games.
