Bothell High School will not be disqualified from the Class 4A baseball semifinals after the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association decided Tuesday the Cougars did not violate a rule that limits the number of innings an pitcher can throw in one day.
Fourth-ranked Bothell plays No. 8 Richland at 7 p.m. Friday at Cheney Stadium in Tacoma.
The rule in question was 51.5.0 in the WIAA handbook, which deals with pitcher limitation. A Cougars pitcher threw a complete-game against Federal Way and 1/3 of an inning against Edmonds-Woodway.
After looking into the issue, WIAA executive director Mike Colbrese said that, based on the wording of the rule, Bothell was not found to be in violation.
“The problem arises with the language in the rule itself, the way it’s written,” Colbrese said. “It does allow the latitude that would stipulate that what the Bothell coach did was not a violation.”
Colbrese said the WIAA has contacted the school that inquired about the potential violation and added he expects the wording of the rule to be more clearly defined in the future.
