Catching up with Mount Si lineman Josh Mitchell

It was impossible to miss.

The black SUV sat in the Mount Si parking lot with “Go Beavers” painted in orange on the back windshield. There was no doubt the SUV belonged to Wildcats senior Josh Mitchell, who recently committed to Oregon State.

Inside the school’s weight room, the 6-foot-3 1/2 — he stresses the 1/2 — 275-pound lineman had just finished working out, wearing a bright orange shirt with the Beavers’ logo on the front.

Now that he has made his decision — he picked the Beavers over Washington State, Wyoming, Eastern Washington and Montana — he is determined to live up to his billing as a Division I lineman.

Mitchell has been flying under the radar a little bit. In a way, he resembles the team he plays for, because the Wildcats always seem to be overlooked heading into the season, but usually find a way to make it into the playoffs and, once they get there, they are always dangerous.

The defending Class 3A wrestling champion at 285 pounds is used to surprising people. He wasn’t the favorite on the wrestling mat and he’s not the tallest lineman. But he funnels that into motivation. It has worked so far, since he played his way into a Division I scholarship, placing himself among the state’s stellar 2012 class that could produce 10, or more, D-I lineman.

Mitchell has accomplished a lot so far, but but there is plenty in front of him to look forward to. He took some time Monday to talk about the 2011 season and his decision to commit to Oregon State.
