Weekend in the wild with King’s football program

At about 10:30 a.m. Saturday morning, I will pull up to Woolsey Stadium in Shoreline where King’s football players should be wrapping up practice.

I’ll grab my duffle bag and sleeping bag and head out to experience something different.

Every year the Knights make the trip to Barnes Island for their Breakaway Retreat. The island is 38 acres of uninhabited wilderness in the San Juans — it’s about a 13-mile boat ride from Anacortes. The trip provides a chance for players and coaches to build a bond they will carry throughout the season.

It is my first time making the trip, but I understand the concept. Schools all over the state go on similar trips, all with the goal of building a better team.

While I get the idea, it will be a new experience for me, but it should be a fun one. The blog will be a little quiet while I’m gone — hard to get a good internet connection on an uninhabited island — but I’ll have plenty to post when I get back.
