Class 4A and 3A girls basketball rankings — Week 3

As mentioned last week, the top-ranked teams in both 4A (Lewis and Clark of Spokane) and 3A (Prairie) have both lost.

After much thought, one drops out of the No. 1 spot and the other stays.

It was a no-brainer to slip L-C down a few notches after the 20-point loss to Central Valley, which was No. 3. The debate was whether to move Mount Rainier up from No. 2 or go with CV in the top spot.

I like the adage that goes you’ve got to beat No. 1 to be No. 1, and so Central Valley gets the nod….at least for now.

Lake Stevens, which had a nice win over then-No. 6 Stanwood last week, inches up to No. 3 this week and Skyview, the team that knocked off Prairie, takes the No. 4 spot. Woodinville stays at No. 5 and L-C slips to No. 6 with Stanwood No. 7.

Emerald Ridge jumps in at No. 8 after beating Federal Way in overtime last week. The Jags then went to overtime again to beat Spanaway Lake. Federal Way falls from ninth to 10th, just below Jackson.

And Eastlake, which was ranked No. 8 but lost by almost 30 to Stanwood, now sits on the watch list. The Wolves could well be back in the top-10 soon and I’ve got an eye on unbeaten Kentwood as well.

Prairie stays at No. 1 in 3A in part because the team they lost to is a highly ranked 4A team — and also because I’m not entirely sold that No. 2 Kamiakin or No. 3 Wilson should be in the top spot just yet.

I still see Prairie as the team to beat in 3A — if they shoot better than they did against Skyview, and I think most nights they will.

Two others in the top five also went down as No. 4 Shadle Park lost to University and No. 5 Juanita fell against Liberty. Shadle also lost to Coeur d’Alene and I had to make room for both University and Liberty, so the Highlanders tumble all of the way down to the watch list.

U-Hi gets the No. 6 spot with Liberty checking in at No. 9. I’m keeing Juanita in at No. 10.

So, we’ll see what this week brings, but for now these rankings will stand:
