Hazen wrestling match to benefit Pancreatic Cancer Action Network

An empty chair will serve as a reminder and, Rory Magana hopes, help raise awareness of how deadly pancreatic cancer can be.

The Hazen wrestling coach lost his father, Rodney, to the disease last June — just eight months after he was diagnosed.

Rodney was in the Hazen wrestling corner at his son’s side last January when the Highlanders were hosts for a double-dual with Oak Harbor, Highline and Mount Rainier.

“It was a special night,” Rory recalls. “He passed on June 18 and we kind of wanted to do something in his honor.”

So, this year’s double-dual has been turned into a fund-raiser and tabbed the first annual Taking Down Pancreatic Cancer Match. It is set for this Friday (Jan. 13) at 6 p.m. and involves Hazen, Oak Harbor, Highline and Chief Sealth.

Doors open at 5 p.m. Admission will be by donation and the event will also include a bake sale and raffle, with all proceeds going to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network, which will have an information table set up.

“It’s one of the deadliest diseases around, but it’s just not talked about,” said Rory, a 2002 Oak Harbor graduate in his third year as Hazen’s head coach.

He plans to say a few words about his father before the match and also have a representative from the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network speak.

Get out and support the event if you can.
