4A and 3A girls hoops rankings — Week 12

As Charlie Brown would say, Good Grief!

Ever since unranked Federal Way knocked off No. 1 Mount Rainier Friday, thanks largely to the hot shooting of Darah Huertes-Vining (six three-pointers in the third quarter!), I’ve been trying to figure out what to do with the Class 4A rankings.

And of course No. 2 Stanwood lost to No. 8 Jackson, too.

Normally, I’m pretty old-school about these things. You lose to a team, you drop below them in the rankings — and that’s true with Stanwood and Jackson. But at this stage of the season, I’m cutting Mount Rainier a little slack. No, the Rams do not stay at No. 1, but they only slip to No. 3, and Federal Way jumps back in the top-10 at No. 7.

So, who’s No. 1? I toyed with the idea of putting Lake Stevens there, but ultimately decided to go back to Central Valley of Spokane.

Jackson inches up to No. 6 and Stanwood slides to No. 8. With Auburn Riverside losing twice to Kentwood, and Inglemoor stumbling against Eastlake, there was one more open spot in the top-10. It goes to Kentwood, which is playing very well right now. Bellarmine Prep of Tacoma is next in line.

In 3A, the only real upset was Glacier Peak’s victory over No. 6 Lynnwood. The Royals had won 10 in a row since their previous loss, also to the Grizzlies.

So, for now, Lynnwood is back on the watch list. But the No. 10 spot isn’t going to Glacier Peak, although they were highly considered. I’m going with Shorecrest, which has won its past five — including a game over the Grizzlies.

Other than that, there is just some shuffling in 3A.

We’ll have final rankings next week. But these will stand for now:
