Evergreen tabs Andy Arena as head football coach

Andy Arena is the new head football coach at Evergreen High School.

Arena was an assistant at Evergreen under Shaun Tarantola from 2005-07, then left with Tarantola when Tarantola took over at Juanita and has been an assistant there the past four seasons.

He succeeds Mark Becker, who stepped down after two seasons and a 1-16 record. The Wolverines ended a 21-game losing streak with a victory over Highline in the final game of 2011. They were 1-8 in 2009, with a forfeit over Tyee accounting for the lone win. They last won a game on the field in September of 2008, over Tyee, in the middle of a 1-9 campaign.

Evergreen enjoyed success under Tarantola and Arena, going 20-11 over three seasons and 17-4 the final two — including a 9-2 finish in 2008.

Arena, who teaches at Cedarhurst Elementary School in the Highline School District, was an assistant on the Juanita softball team that won the 3A state championship last spring.

“Andy is a committed educator and coach,” said Terri McMahan, district athletic director. “He articulated a solid knowledge of football and the ability to break down skills and build program with kids. He teaches in our district and is passionate about providing solid fundamentals instruction and competitive opportunities. Andy has the skill set and patience to build our program and we look forward to the improvement of our players on the field, in the classroom and in the community.”
