Skyline football coach Mat Taylor confirmed Thursday that the Spartans will travel out of state in Week 2 to play Cottonwood of Murray, Utah.
The matchup, scheduled for Sept. 7, features two of the top quarterback prospects in the country in Skyline’s Max Browne and the Colts’ Cooper Bateman.
“Obviously I’m biased but, other than Max, they have one of the top quarterbacks in the nation,” Taylor said. “He has every offer that Max has. He’s very, very talented. Last year, they were 5-5, but they’ve got everybody back on offense and they’re very talented. It should be a lot of fun.”
Bateman, rated the No. 4 quarterback in the country by Scout.com, threw for 2,484 yards and 25 touchdowns last season, but the Colts lost in the first round of the playoffs. Browne, the nation’s top-rated passer, racked up 4,034 yards and 45 touchdowns, leading the Spartans to the Class 4A state title.
One week after playing Cottonwood, Skyline will play Manatee of Bradenton, Fla. Sept. 15, another team with a talented quarterback in Cord Sandberg, Florida’s 7A Player of the Year.
“It will be a lot of fun,” Taylor said. “It’s really going to add a lot of importance to the offseason and focus for the kids. I know the focus will be on Cottonwood and Manatee, but we’re playing Bothell Week 1, too, and Bothell is going to be very, very good.”
