I still find it challenging to juggle the state softball rankings in Class 4A.
Walla Walla and Woodinville remain a solid 1-2. Woodinville was impressive with a 4-0 victory over Juanita (No. 1 in 3A) last Friday. Walla Walla gets tested this Friday against No. 5 Richland, which owes its two losses to Kamiakin (No. 3 in 3A).
But Central Valley, formerly No. 3, went 2-2 last week, falling to a pair of 3A teams Mount Spokane and North Central. Both were one-run games, however, so the Bears stay in the top-10 at No. 7.
Puyallup notched a quality win over rival Rogers, then fell to Spanaway Lake, a .500 team that features a solid pitcher. It’s the only loss of the season for the Vikings, though, so they simply fall from No. 6 to No. 9.
Ballard and Olympia both slipped last week, and they’re back on the watch list. Newport jumps in at No. 8 and I really wrestled with that No. 10 spot. Finally, it went to Skyview, which is playing well as of late.
The only changes in 3A are a flip-flop between Holy Names and Mount Si in the bottom two positions after the Wildcats’ 11-0 loss to Juanita. I’m not penalizing Juanita for losing to Woodinville, although Everett and Kamiakin are making strong bids for that No. 1 ranking as well.
Holy Names and No. 4 Bainbridge are scheduled to play twice this week, so that should be interesting!
