WIAA Kickoff Classic moves to Eastern Washington this year

The renovation of Husky Stadium is having a trickle-down affect on the WIAA football event previously known as the Emerald City Kickoff Classic.

Games had been played at CenturyLink Field (previously known as Qwest Field) since the event’s inception in 2003. But CenturyLink is home to the Huskies this fall and they have a home game there against San Diego State on Saturday, Sept. 1, the date of the kickoff event.

So for at least this year, it is being called the WIAA Kickoff Classic and will be played on Eastern Washington University’s Roos Field.

All eight teams involved are from East of the mountains. Here’s the lineup:

10 a.m. — Tekoa-Oakesdale-Rosalia vs. Reardan

1 p.m. — Colville vs. Freeman

4 p.m. — East Valley (Yakima) vs. Cheney

7 p.m. — Central Valley vs. Ferris

Andy Barnes, WIAA assistant excecutive director who manages the event, said it is unclear whether the Kickoff Classic will return to CenturyLink in future years since it depends on the venue’s availability.

The Emerald City Volleyball Invitational is also moving across the state this year and will be on Friday, Aug. 31, at Cheney High School. Teams have yet to be announced.
