Girls soccer: 3A champ Seattle Prep takes on 4A champ Skyline

One of the best early-season soccer games takes place tonight at Skyline at 7:30 p.m. as defending 4A champ Skyline plays two-time defending 3A champ Seattle Prep.

Both teams are once again ranked in the top 10 of their respective classifications this year.

Skyline is coming off a 2-1 win against Liberty, the team Prep beat in the 3A final a year ago. And while games like these don’t factor into league standings, they can be useful for both teams as gauges.

“We really use them as a way to reevaluate players,” Skyline coach Don Braman said. “Tryouts are only an initial indication of players. We want to find out who plays well together, who can understand the style and formation we’re trying to implement.”

Tuesday, though, throws in another wrinkle: It’s the first day of school, which will add another distraction for the Spartans as they face a tough and talented Prep team.

“I don’t feel like we’ll be unaware of the level of competition,” Braman said, “but I think the biggest thing for us will be working through distractions.”

And that’s what these games are good for: Providing a chance for two quality teams to get tested before the grind of league play and the playoffs.

“For us,” Braman said, “we want to be challenged and pushed.”

Check back tomorrow for a wrap up of the game.
