Washington’s players and teams in the national high school record book

After Kentlake’s Steffin Church threw for a school-record eight touchdowns (we had him for nine in the paper, but it was later corrected to eight) in a 76-55 win against Puyallup, I started looking into the high school record for most touchdown passes in a game.

And that led me on a wild goose chase through the record books. Below are a couple highlights. Also, click here for the 10 most untouchable high school football records compiled by MaxPreps.

Most overtimes in a single game: Bothell and Pasco played nine overtime in a game played on Nov. 18, 2006. Bothell won 43-40.

Most passing yards in a career : Brian Lindgren from DeSales High in Walla Walla checked in at 7th with 12,575 from 1995 to 98. Other notable names on the list: Chris Leak, Garrett Gilbert, Tim Couch, Greg Paulus.

DeSales’ Pat Graham has the 25th most passing yards in a single season. He threw for 4,410 yards in 1991. Lindgren was a few spots behind with 4,253 yards in 1998.

High completion percentage in a season with a minimum of 600 attempts: Garrett Grayson (Vancouver Heritage, WA) completed 71.6 of his passes in 2009.

Most touchdown passes in a career: DeSales’ Brian Lindgren tossed 162 touchdowns from 1995 to 1998.

Most touchdown passes in a game: Brian Lindgren also tossed nine touchdowns in a game, which ties him for second all-time. The most touchdown passes in a game is 10. The records only show quarterbacks who have thrown nine touchdowns, but it’s fair to say that Kentlake’s Steffin Church is in a pretty rare class with his eight touchdown passes.

Most receiving yards in a game: Peninsula’s Tom Owens had 358 receiving yards against Yelm on Oct. 17, 1986. Owens also ranks third in receiving touchdowns in a game with six against Yelm.

Owens also ranked second in receiving yards per game (minimum of eight games) with 147.1 yards per game in the 1,986 season. He had 1,618 yards in 11 games that year.

Most receptions in a season: Lake Washington’s Jeff Fritchman had 126 catches in 2003.

Most points in a game for 8-man football: Shane Sanders (Oakville, WA) had 62 points in 1992, which ranks him fifth.

Most yards in a career for 8-man football: Patrick Hunter (Pateros, WA) had 9.004 yards from 1993 to 95. He also ranked ninth with 561 yards in a game in 1994.

Most rushing yards in a career for 8-man football: Lonnie Simpson (Inchelium, WA) had 6,274 yards rushing from 1981 to 1983.
