Class 4A, 3A and 2A state volleyball rankings — Week 5

Here’s something you don’t see too often — there are no changes in The Times’ Class 4A state volleyball rankings this week.

It’s probably the calm before the storm, because I won’t be surprised to see some movement next Monday, since the big Spokane Crossover Classic is this weekend.

I’ll get back to that, but first I’ve got to give props to Bainbridge for a big week that featured victories over Holy Names (former 3A No. 1) and Eastside Catholic (still No. 7). The Islanders are playing great right now and I was even thinking of heading up to see them at the Bearcat Invitational this Saturday in Monroe.

But then I heard they had dropped out. So, I’ll have to catch them later.

It was a rough, rought week for Holy Names, which went on to lose to Lakeside and Eastside Catholic. I’m dropping the Cougars all of the way out of the top-10, for now. Of course there’s a new No. 1, but it isn’t Bainbridge.

The Spartans leap in at No. 4, but I’m taking a more conventional route with the top spot and moving Mercer Island up from No. 2, followed by Prairie and Mount Si.

Southridge, No. 5 last week, tumbles out after losing last week to Kennewick, which had been in the top-10 before losing to Kamiakin (along with two quality 4A teams, No. 9 Richland and Chiawana).

That puts Seattle Prep up to No. 5 and the Panthers have a big week with Eastside Catholic tonight (Monday) and Holy Names on Wednesday (then Bainbridge on Oct. 8). I’ve bumped Mount Spokane to No. 6 and Kennewick is back in at No. 10.

The only change in 2A is Washington taking the No. 10 spot after last week’s win over Fife, which had been No. 10. I looked at Sehome, but I am not convinced yet that the Northwest Conference deserves three teams in the rankings.

Now, back to the Crossover Classic, which features 64 teams — including Jackson (4A No. 1) and Mead (4A No. 2). West Valley of Yakima (2A No. 1) and Prairie (3A No. 2) will also be there and it should be a highly competitive tournament. Several other ranked teams are entered as well. I’ll post the pools later this week and hopefully have an update on the full field at the Bearcat Invitational.

For now, here are this week’s rankings:
