Seattle Prep’s D.J. Fenner scores his 1,000th-career point

On the very first bucket of his senior year against Lakeside on Friday, Seattle Prep’s D.J. Fenner, a 6-foot-6 guard signed with Nevada, scored his 1,000th-career point.

He finished the game with 20 points and seven rebounds while hitting a shot with less than 30 seconds left to give Prep a 58-56 win against a tough Lakeside team. Prep is 2-0 this season, and Fenner is averaging 21.5 points per game.

“He can get to the basket against anybody complimented by the ability to have really great body control,” Seattle Prep coach Mike Kelly said. “And he shoots the mid-range jumper as good as anyone I’ve ever been around. He’s a strong, strong kid.”

Fenner is sixth on Prep’s all-time scoring list with 1,018 career points. He’s 210 points behind NBA player Spencer Hawes and 400 points behind NBA player Martell Webster. Erik Bond, who graduated in 2001, tops the list with 1,894 career points.

Kelly said Fenner, who averaged 18.3 points per game last season, has taken on an expanded role this year for a Prep team that is breaking in a bunch of new players.

“What he’s doing this year that’s a little bit different than previous years is his leadership and his calming influence on the court,” Kelly said.

Prep plays Cleveland (1-1) on Tuesday.
