News and commentary on high-school sports around Puget Sound.

First, I wanted to give a quick recap of what “regionals” actually is since I’ve received a few questions on that topic this week.

The 16-team regional round started a few years ago when the WIAA voted to shrink the state tournament from 16 teams (and a double-elimination format) to eight teams because of sagging attendance. The move also cut costs because the reduction cut the tournament from four days to three.

As a result, the regional round was formed to decide which eight teams would go to the state tournament. Games this weekend are single elimination. The winners go to state at one of the three state sites (Spokane, Yakima, Tacoma). The losers are done. The WIAA then redraws to determine the matchups for the state tournament.

And now on to the matchups (or potential matchups) this week. There are still a few games to be played, but by Monday night, all the dust should be settled and the brackets should be completely filled in.
