Boys state basketball tournament: No. 6 Mountlake Terrace 59, No. 9 University 56
TACOMA – Marquis Armstead completed a three-point play with five seconds left that carried No. 6 Mountlake Terrace to a 59-56 win against No. 9 University in a Class 3A consolation game on Friday.
Brett Bailey, University’s 6-foot-5 guard signed with San Diego, tied the game with a three-pointer with 28 seconds left. That left Terrace with the ball and a chance to win. The ball ended up in the hands of Armstead, a senior and one of Terrace’s leaders.
He beat his man to the basket, absorbed the contact, made the shot and knocked down the free-throw. That sent a vocal Mountlake Terrace student section into a frenzy.
Armstead finished with 12 points while Loren Lacasse led Terrace with 18 points and nine rebounds. Greg Bowman had 13 points and nine rebounds for the Hawks.
Terrace trailed by as many as 10 in the first half, but the Hawks closed the second quarter on a 12-3 run and led by three at halftime.
Bailey scored 28 points but 16 of those came in the first half as Terrace did a better job of containing him.
Mountlake Terrace will play No. 10 Seattle Prep at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday in the fourth-place game. As has been the case all season, four Terrace players scored in double figures.
