Girls: Kamiakin 57, Mercer Island 47

Sira Toure said she didn’t want to go home.

And she made she she and her Kamiakin teammates are staying in Tacoma for another day. She scored 15 of her 26 points in the opening quarter as the seventh-ranked Braves (19-6) advanced to Saturday’s trophy round.

Mercer Island (21-8) saw its trophy hopes end, but enjoyed a standout season — especially after going just 5-15 last year.

The Islanders trailed the entire game, but kept things interesting most of the way. Renae Tessem’s basket cut what had been a 17-point lead to eight with 2:28 to play in the third quarter, but Kamiakin resonded with six straight points. MI was hurt by 22 turnovers.

Jess Blakeslee led the Islanders with 13 points, while Julia Blumenstein added 11. Christina Williamson pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds.
