Looks like Bothell football’s running back Sam McPherson just got something in the mail.
Monday, McPherson received his certificate from the WIAA naming him the State Athlete of the Week for the week of September 1-7, 2013.
Along with a picture of the certificate, he tweeted out: “Wow, what an honor, couldn’t have done it without my team. Thank you #blessed #StateAthleteOfTheWeek @wiaawa”.
The WIAA State Athlete of the Week is an individual athlete nominated by athletic directors and coaches. Weekly winners are selected by a small committee.
Week 1 – the week he received the nomination for – was the week Bothell clawed its way to a 44-43 victory over Coeur d’Alene in the Emerald City Kickoff Classic at Husky Stadium.
That game, McPherson returned the opening kickoff 88 yards for a touchdown, rushed for 73 yards on 13 carries, punted four times, returned another four punts, returned six kicks for 196 yards, including the 88-yard touchdown, and made seven tackles on defense.
All of the Week 1 winners are posted on the WIAA’s website, with other athletes from the area getting the award, as well.
