Auburn Riverside boys basketball coach Jason Brown is serving a four-game suspension for violation of the WIAA out-of-season contact rules, according to Rick Wells, Puyallup School District athletic director and SPSL chairman.
Because it’s a personnel issue, I was not able to get a great deal of information about the situation. Doug Auburn, Auburn Riverside AD, and Rob Swaim, Auburn School District AD, said they could not comment at all.
And Wells said he could not get into details about the violation.
But from what I heard from sources, the violation came late last spring and involved providing transportation to a player from another school to an AAU tournament at Auburn Riverside.
When someone brought the situation to the attention of Riverside administrators, the school did a full investigation and then self-reported to the SPSL ADs in the fall.
Wells said the ADs used a WIAA penalty chart to determine the sanction for Brown’s actions, which they determined was a Level 2 violation, and voted for a four-game suspension (20% of a 20-game regular season; the suggested range in the WIAA handbook is 10-50%.
He therefore missed Monday’s opener against Capital, which the Ravens won 109-74. Brown is able to coach during practices during the four-game stretch. But the head coaching duties at the first four games is being handled by assistant Earl Taylor.
