The WIAA has updated its classification data this week for the 2014-16 cycle, and you can find the latest numbers here.
Please remember that these are still preliminary cutoff lines and schools have until January 7 to officially decide if they are going to opt-up.
There are sure to be some more changes.
The biggest news is that you can expect to see Garfield and Ballard drop to 3A and rejoin the Metro League! I’m told Roosevelt is hoping to go that route, too, but still is above the cutoff line as of now with 4A numbers. Again, that could change as schools opt-up or if enrollment counts are appealed.
You’ll note that Newport is now showing an intent to opt-up and remain 4A, and I’ve been told that likely will be the case. And while I heard a rumor last week that Bellevue might opt-up to 4A, that apparently was strictly a rumor and it appears the school will stay 3A.
Decatur will move back to 4A, while all Auburn and Auburn Riverside will drop to 3A and join Auburn Mountainview. That affects the landscape of both the SPSL 4A (which would drop from 18 to 17 teams) and SPSL 3A (up from six to eight or nine, because Summner now has 3A numbers, too).
We are working on a bigger story on the whole reclassification picture. With one more weeke of football, and the start of basketball, we are being pulled in a lot of different directions.
We will keep you posted!
