Extra Bases: Wrapping up the state tournament

Pierre Le Dorze has had better seasons on the mound. But when O’Dea has asked its senior leader to step up, Le Dorze has taken the ball and taken the challenge head on.

The latest example? The 3A state championship game last Saturday. Le Dorze tossed a complete-game shutout three-hit shutout to lead the Irish ot a 12-0 win over Bonney Lake in a contest shortened to five innings by the mercy rule.

“Pierre is very competitive and he doesn’t want to lose at anything,” O’Dea coach Mike Doyle said. “He definitely didn’t want to come out, and he pitched very well.”

Le Dorze, who will continue his baseball career at Cornell as an outfielder, also had a trio of singles in the game for the Irish, who finished the season 25-2. It’s the third state title for Doyle as the O’Dea head coach.

O’Dea almost didn’t advance to the championship game after Mt. Spokane mounted a furious 7th-inning rally in the semifinal matchup. Trying to hold onto a 4-1 lead entering the final frame, and after allowing a two-run double to bring the score 4-3, the Irish were in trouble. With runners on second and third, O’Dea found some luck after a baserunning error led to an unconventional game-ending double play.

Meanwhile, Shorewood’s tough pitching wasn’t enough for it to win a game during championship weekend, as the Thunderbirds lost 12-3 to Bonney Lake in the semifinals and then 9-4 (9 innings) to Mt. Spokane in the third-place game.

Shorewood (20-4) actually rallied to tie the third-place game with a run in the seventh, but after Ian Oxnevad was forced from the game after eight tough innings, Mt. Spokane struck for five runs in the deciding ninth.

Elsewhere around the state, Lake Washington fell just shy in its attempt to win a state championship, falling 2-1 to Ellensburg in the title game.

Woodinville, vying for third place after falling to eventual state champs Puyallup in the semifinals, fell short against Wenatchee, 5-3.
