Weekend in review

Everybody enjoy the first weekend of preps football? Now that you’ve had time to digest what was an impressive slate of matchups, let’s take a quick look at some results that stand out.

(One quick note first: Some of you might remember me when I joined The Seattle Times team last year during the end of the football season. I’m happy to be back on staff for what should be another exciting year of high school sports. Feel free to reach me with thoughts, ideas and tips at jliebeskind@seattletimes.com and @jlieb24.)

On to the good stuff now.

– With respect to all other teams, Camas-Chiawana had to be the best game of the week. If you don’t remember, Chiawana scored twice in the final minute of last year’s state title game to knock off Camas in one of the most thrilling high school games ever (I’m going to take the liberty of calling it that without having proof, but I think we can all agree on it).

The rematch took place in Camas and the Papermakers found revenge in a 16-14 win. Paul Valencia of The Columbian writes that Camas had to hold off Chiawana again, but were successful this time in a matchup of ranked teams.

– There has been plenty of coverage of the Bellevue win over Serra (Calif.), but you can read MaxPreps’ story. Also, the Wolverines moved up four spots to No. 9 in the latest MaxPreps rankings.

– A strong second half gave Union a 34-27 road win at Federal Way in a matchup of ranked teams. Here is Sandy Ringer’s game report. As Sandy notes, Federal Way gets another tough test when it travels to Camas to face the defending state runner-ups. Here’s the report from The Columbian.

– And finally, if you missed the top 10 performances from Friday, you can find them here.
