Eastlake quarterback Blue Thomas is progressing from an injury to his right hand that he suffered in the opener against Bothell, but it is undetermined if he’ll be ready to start against Issaquah. Thomas started last week’s win against Gig Harbor, but his injury rendered him ineffective and junior Mark Whitley took over at the end of the first half.
“He actually threw the ball well yesterday,” Eastlake coach Don Bartel said. “There’s just a point where you take him out of the game because you’re going to do more damage with him not having his full physical capabilities. Once he gets that back, he’ll be fine.”
If Thomas is unable to play against Issaquah, Whitley will once again step in. The junior was impressive in the win against Gig Harbor, capably moving the offense. It’s a luxury for Bartel to have as he makes sure he has his team fully healthy at the end of the season.
“If we just keep building, keep getting better, keep focusing on ourselves, not who we’re playing and we’re going,” Bartel said. “These guys are buying into the idea if we’re ready, we’re ready, if we’re not, we build and keep going.”
