It’s time for a test.
And Auburn Riverside coach Chris Leverenz expects her volleyball team to get a few Saturday at the ultra-competitive Linda Sheridan Classic in Spokane.
The Ravens are unbeaten and ranked No. 1 in Class 3A, but have not seen the kind of top-notch competition they can expect come playoff time.
There’s plenty of it in this tournament, starting with Mead of Spokane in pool play. The Panthers aren’t as powerful as in years past, but still a worthy opponent.
And the 64-team field is loaded with other ranked teams, including Battle Ground (4A No. 2), Central Valley (4A No. 3), University (4A No. 4), Camas (4A No. 6), Eisenhower (4A No. 7), West Valley of Yakima (4A No. 9), Columbia River (3A No. 4), Kamiakin (3A No. 7) and Ridgefield (2A No. 6).
“We are really looking forward to competing all weekend long,” Leverenz said. “We need some challenges right now. Don’t get me wrong – some of the teams have battled with us, but I would like my kids to feel a little nervous about what they see on the other side of the net.”
Another great option Saturday for volleyball fans is Bearcat Invitational in Monroe, where you’ll find Bellarmine Prep (4A No. 5), Mount Si (4A No. 10), Kennedy Catholic (2A No. 2) and Holy Names (3A No. 5) among the 12 entries.
I’ll have a wrap-up on both tournaments Monday, along with fresh rankings.
