Video and quotes: A look at Bellevue’s win over Glacier Peak

Bellevue rolled out to an early lead and then coasted to a 30-0 win over Glacier Peak last night. What stood out about the win was the passing ability the No. 1 Wolverines have with Justus Rogers under center. Tyson Penn is a huge target out wide for the junior quarterback at 6 foot 5 and 200.

Rogers talks about his connection with Penn after the game:

Bellevue did not look great, though, making way too many mental mistakes that led to penalties. Bellevue was whistled for six penalties in the first half, with another being offset.

“Obviously the penalties, if we’re going to get where we ultimately want to go, we got to get a lot better than that,” Bellevue coach Butch Goncharoff said.

Goncharoff took credit for the penalties, saying he needs to prepare the team better. Early on, it looked as if the Grizzlies would take advantage of the mistakes, but they were ultimately unable to move the ball. The opportunities were there, though, but the short slants were just not being completed, which led to third-down and long too many times.

Here are some leftover quotes:

Goncharoff

We’re playing OK, we’ve had some kids beat up. We’re not clicking there. Our defense came to play tonight. That was big. We’ve been kind of hit-and-miss and our defense needs to carry us a little bit. Obviously the penalties, if we’re going to get where we ultimately want to go, we got to get a lot better than that. We told the kids tonight, I think we lead the league in penalties and turnovers … but again, we got to get more disciplined. I got to do a better job coaching us, for sure.

You go back to basics. It’s all about the little things. It starts with me. I just got to do a better job. Getting these guys ready, understand, hey, everything’s important. Just happens. High school kids, you just kind of come and go.

We just got Tyson up and going, he got eligible a week or so ago. He’s a good-looking athlete. He’s a good kid. We like our receivers. We’ve been throwing it for about four or five years pretty well now. Justus played a lot last year, he had a great game tonight. We’ve been telling people, I really feel he’s a special player. We’re going to take what’s there and they did a great job of stacking the run and daring us to throw. We’ll take it if that’s there.

Rogers

He’s just a great athlete. I just have to throw the ball in his vicinity and he’ll catch the ball. And hands down to my linemen, they gave me time to even throw to him. Overall, it was a great win for us. We got little kinks to kind of flatten out, but overall it was a good game, we’re getting better every week.

We’re just trying to mix it up a bit, so we’re not like a one-dimensional team. We’re trying to open it up more so we can be even better than what we’ve been these past years.

Those are just those little mental mistakes that I was just talking about that we got to clean up, but we had great effort the entire game. You can’t really coach effort. We just got to get better every week.

Phenomenal, the defense was really great. They really picked it up and made me be comfortable with the cushion of the score. But Glacier Peak, they’re a great team. They came all the way down here, I respect them a lot.
