The top seven teams remain intact in this week’s Class 4A state volleyball rankings.
But there are newcomers — actually returners — in the next three spots after losses by No. 8 Curtis (to Bethel), No. 9 Mount Si (to Issaquah and Newport) and No. 10 Mead (to Gonzaga Prep).
So, welcome back to Eisenhower, Snohomish and Skyline, and we’ll see how they fare this week.
In 3A, Kamiakin raised a lot of eyebrows with a 3-2 loss to Kennewick — especially after leading 7-0 in the fifth set. I’m not sure what’s going on with the Braves, who also recently lost to Pasco. But I’ve heard a lot of good things about that them and they have a solid program (and they did beat Southridge earlier this year), so they will stay in for another week, although they drop from seventh to 10th.
That Southridge-Kamiakin rematch is Tuesday.
And Ferndale stays in (actually moving up a notch to No. 9) despite the loss to Burlington-Edison, which is ranked fifth in 2A.
That Northwest Conference has been tough to keep a handle on and last week was expecially puzzling as Lynden beat Anacortes, but then lost to unranked Bellingham, which Anacortes has beaten.
I’ve had four NWC teams in the rankings most (if not all) of the season, so for now I’m dropping both Lynden and Anacortes in favor of East Valley of Spokane and Ellensburg. East Valley of Yakima and Archbiship Murphy are also on my radar — and I haven’t given up on Anacortes or Lynden either.
So here are the complete 4A, 3A and 2A rankings for this week:
1. Emerald Ridge (Puyallup)
2. Bellarmine Prep (Tacoma)
3. West Valley (Yakima)
