Bellevue avenges dual meet loss, Newport takes Kingco 4A dual title

MERCER ISLAND – Goal No. 1: Redemption. Check.

Goal No. 2: Accomplishment. To be decided Feb. 20-21 at King County Aquatic Center, at the 3A boys state swim meet.

The Bellevue Wolverines took care of the first goal on Tuesday night at Mary Wayte Pool, avenging a heart-breaking Kingco dual meet championship loss of a year ago with a runaway, 125-58 win over Mercer Island.

In the 4A championship meet, Newport overcame an early deficit against Eastlake to win the title, 106-79.

Bellevue won every event but diving in the 3A meet on Tuesday.

“Last year, we lost by one point,” said junior Dan Prang, who won the 100-yard freestyle for Bellevue. “We were trying to redeem ourselves for that one point.”

Bellevue may be peaking at the right time, heading into the post-season. The Wolverines have steadily moved up the state 3A rankings the past three years – from sixth, to third, to second in 2014.

“I knew these guys were special,” Bellevue coach Andy Hay said. “Sometimes it takes swimming a team like Mercer Island to make it happen. I’m glad it did. It’s a springboard into the playoffs.”

While the Wolverines dominated the Islanders, the defending 3A state champs, defending 4A champion Newport had to work a little harder.

Tied after the fourth event – the 50 free – with Eastlake, and trailing despite Oey Chang’s win in the diving competition, the Knights turned it on late in the meet.

“Every place mattered in this meet,” Newport coach Eric Bartleson said. “I’m really proud of the way the guys swam.”
