The Right Stuff Volleyball Blog: Kent Classic should be a classic

The Kent Classic Volleyball Tournament this Saturday should be just that – a classic. The 30-team field not only includes the two teams ranked 1-2 in Class 4A, Emerald Ridge and Bellarmine Prep, but No. 4 Camas and No. 8 Skyline as well. Always-tough Mead of Spokane is entered as well. Some high-caliber 3A squads will be there, too,…

Class 4A, 3A and 2A state volleyball rankings — Week 7

Gotta love high-school volleyball, right?

And if you’re reading this, you must.

On any given night….

There are certainly no sure things, although I feel pretty good about the teams I’ve got ranked in each of the top three classifications — Bellarmine Prep, Southridge and Burlington Edison. Those jive with the Coaches Association rankings, too (not that those have a great deal of influence on mine, to be honest). I’ve had Bellarmine and Southridge at the top all season, although West Valley of Yakima started No. 1 in 2A.

At any rate, the “shocker” last week was Kentridge’s 3-2 victory over Kentwood, which had been cruising along and had shot up to No. 2 after an earlier win over Emerald Ridge. The Conquerors were even in PrepVolleyball.com’s top-100. No longer. Kentridge started the season 0-7, but has been playing better as of late and that win over KW was a third straight — followed by a 3-0 loss to Auburn Riverside.

As far as the rankings go, it’s the time of the season where it’s difficult to make huge changes based on a single match, because you have to keep the bigger picture in focus.

A quick congratulations to Emerald Ridge, which started the season ranked No. 2 in Class 4A behind Bellarmine Prep and won the big Adidas Invitational Saturday at Auburn Mountainview. You can catch some of the…

John Tawa has posted the top-100 national volleyball rankings on PrepVolleyball.com, and you can find them here. Bellarmine features 6-2 senior Courtney Schwan, a UW commit who lead the Lions to the Class 4A state championship last season…
