“He was a good wrestler last year, but this year, he’s a great wrestler,” Boardman said of Smith, who hopes to join older brother, Morgan, as a state champion. “He’s gotten better with his body position and his work ethic. He put in the prep work in the offseason.

“It’s been a fun year to watch him grow and change.”

“A lot of seniors kind of get freaked out, and say, ‘This is my last wrestling season and this is the last time I’ll ever wrestle,'” Small said. “Having this safety net is real confidence-booster, because no matter how my senior season ends, I still get to go be part of the best program in the nation.”

“His Dad has the same growth pattern as a kid, and so did his brother,” Arlington coach Rick Iversen said. “His growth was a combination of gaining strength and growing about three inches. He put on a lot of strength.

“We expect him to win [state]. I always temper that by saying there are three great kids in the state at his weight. Last year, we knew he was in it to win it.”

“Weighing In”: Prep wrestling blog — Week 7

The Hornets took 10th at 3A state last season. The school has won four state titles in the wrestling, scoring back-to-back crowns on two occasions in 2008 and 2009 and 2011 and 2012.

Being ranked No. 1 doesn’t meaning anything yet, Eilers understands. He will find out how good the Hornets are at state on Feb. 21-22 in the Tacoma Dome.

“My goal is to win a state title, but also want to do well in the offseason after [school season],” said the 5-foot-2 Freitag, who took third at state in Greco Roman and fourth at state in freestyle at 113 last offseason. “I love wrestling and the people in it. I love the fact that it make me a harder worker.

“Wrestling carries over into my other work. I am used to working hard, and I enjoy it now.”

Prep girls soccer: Eastside coaches to lead West in national all-star game

It is a great honor to be asked to coach a game like this,” Bunnell said. “It is a symbol of all the great kids I have been able to coach over the years. It also will be a blast to be coaching the game with my friend Don Braman from Skyline, our biggest rival school. It is a testament to the great soccer in our area.”
