A look back at the 2A, 1A, 2B, 1B state volleyball tournaments

Unfortunately, we were not able to send reporters to the state volleyball tournaments in Class 2A, 1A, 2B or 1B. Again, for complete results, please check the brackets here. Top-rankled Tumwater beat No. 3 North Kitsap 3-0 in the 2A championship match. But, boy, where the Thunderbirds pushed to the limit before that. They had to…

Class 4A, 3A and 2A state volleyball rankings — Final

We can crown the state poll champions for volleyball in Class 4A (Bellarmine Prep), 3A (Auburn Riverside) and 2A (Tumwater). But the crowns that count come Saturday night, when matters are decided on the court. Those should all be dynamite tournaments! And I’m sure the battles in the smaller classifications will be entertaining as well. In 4A, the…

Post-Ups: A closer look at two girls hoop upsets

Sometimes, I pick a girls basketball game to cover that I expect to be a dandy, and it turns out to be a dud.

And then there are nights like Wednesday, when I ventured out to Liberty of Renton for the first time in several years to see the Pats take on second-ranked Juanita in what turned out to be a dynamite Class 3A showdown.

State girls basketball rankings — Week 6

What a wild week of prep girls basketball — especially in Class 3A and 2A!

I’ve been scrambling most of the day trying to figure out how to rearrange major parts of the rankings in both classifications. I’ve shaken things up a bit, although there are no changes at the top, where Cleveland stays strong atop the 3A list and Mark Morris remains No. 1 in 2A — even though the Monarchs suffered their first loss of the season.

That’s because that loss came to a very good Skyview team, which ranked No. 4 in 4A. No crime there.

But let’s start in 4A, where the only changes come toward the bottom. Puyallup, No. 8 the past two weeks, drops out after suffering its first two losses of the season, back to back.

I wasn’t going to punish the Vikings for Tuesday’s loss to No. 3 Beamer. In fact, I was pretty impressed with the team throughout the first half. But then they lost to Emerald Ridge. So for now they drop back to the watch list.

Arlington and Chiawana each climb one spot and Inglemoor returns to the rankings at No. 10. The Vikings have been playing very well lately and I hope to get out and see them take on No. 6 Eastlake on Saturday. The Wolves won just 46-45 the first time around, but are also on a hot streak with their lone loss coming against No. 5 Mount Rainier.

The other big 4A game in the area Friday finds unbeaten, ninth-ranked Arlington against No. 1 Lynnwood. Hopefully we can get someone to that game, too.
