One Seattle icon passes another

Last night, I neglected to mention something that bears repeating.*

It completely escaped my attention on Saturday, what with the trauma over the inside-out shirt and all, but Ichiro’s final hit that night against the Dodgers — a single to center in the seventh inning off James McDonald, his third hit of the game — was the 1,914th base hit of his major-league career. That moved him one hit past the 1,913 of Ron Fairly.

Belated congratulations, Ichiro. And Ron, we miss you — and I’m being sincere. No one had better baseball stories — especially the ones off mike.

*Actual Ron Fairly quote, circa 1988, when he was calling Giants’ games.
