Role reversal: McLaren will be Riggleman’s bench coach with the Nationals

This one is hot off the presses, broken by Mark Zuckerman of the Washington Times — so fresh it hasn’t even been officially announced.

Jim Riggleman, the new manager of the Washington Nationals, has hired John McLaren to be his bench coach. Yes, the same John McLaren who, as Mariners’ manager, hired Riggleman to be HIS bench coach in 2008. And the same McLaren who saw Riggleman take over as the M’s interim manager when he was fired in June. (The same McLaren, for that matter, who was hired as Mike Hargrove’s bench coach in 2007, and took over as Mariner manager when Hargrove suddenly resigned in early July).

Good for Mac — a good baseball man and a great guy. He belongs in uniform. And good for Riggleman for remembering who helped revive his managerial career. McLaren served as a scout for Tampa Bay last year, but I always felt he would be back in a coaching gig before long. Best of luck to both — with this team, they’re going to need it.
